WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?

I’ve been fighting the Battle of the Blog for two days; my patience and goodwill are both running short.

I’ve posted to this blog, successfully, every week for seven months. I’ve managed to write copy, add scans or photographs that I’ve stored on my desktop, and post, successfully, since July.

And now, suddenly, when trying to post for the first time in 2013, it’s not working.

Frustrated, I contacted my Web Mistress, who did some minor investigating...

...it seems that Google+ wants me to do things their way in 2013 – wants me to use their blogging program; wants me to integrate their social media applications (circles, friends, web albums, webcams, networks, feeds, advertising promos, links, etc.). Google+ wants me to add more personal information onto my profile and wants me to accept more targeted advertising based on that information; wants me to give up any sense of privacy and control!

I want no part of it, even though the price of not conforming may be loss of access to this blog.

It may take a while, but if my Mistress and I can figure out how to avoid this technological invasion of privacy, I’ll be back.

Until then, this blog will sit idle.

I’ll miss you all.

  1. Oh my gosh! I am so upset about this, and am sure that it is headed my way too. I just ignored their suggestions in the past, but maybe they are making it impossible to not participate?

I will miss you; your blog is great.

    1. Thanks, Kathy! Yes, I too ignored all their stuff -- but they've now made it impossible to upload photos UNLESS I create a Web Album and use their blogging tool through Picasa. It just seems to be getting more and more invasive, and I'm not willing to give up quality and control for them. If my Web Mistress can figure it out, I'll be back...thanks for your support -- and I'll keep in touch!

  2. I never signed up for Google+. Like you, I object to the intrusiveness of it. I signed up for FaceBook ever so briefly a few years ago and was disgusted by that aspect of it.
I did do the Picasa Album though, and I don't mind that. You can keep it private, although I'm guessing that is not the default. If you set up a new Google profile that isn't signed up with Google+, maybe it would be different?

    1. There's got to be a way, and I'll keep experimenting until I find it...others are having trouble, too, and they seem to be getting around it. Google+ is insidious, though...thanks for your support, Christine!

  3. I have run into this too and resent it. I do have a google account and so have used it, reluctantly. I have learned that Google backed applications like this will not honor Internet Exporer insisting on converting us to Chrome. Well, I have Chrome but it is a sideline browser for me. Surreptitiously to avoid their alerts I link in thru my Chrome but I am not switiching off IE. Yesterday I noticed the inability to load photos but when I went in with Chrome browser I was able to download from my computer. This is getting to be a battle of the wits, keeping us on point, so to speak. Tiresome as it is. Where there is a will, there can be a way....hmmmm

    1. While I was searching for information about how to bypass this, Pat, I found a Youtube video about Google -- and it declared that no matter how we try to avoid it, we WILL eventually all be using Google+. Scary stuff.
      Thanks for writing!

    2. Despite their slogan Google can be pretty evil sometimes.
